Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory

May 2 - 4, 2003

Kakadu National Park is another of the Top End's gems.  It lies about 150 km east of Darwin, stretches over 200 km south from the coast, and 100 km east to west.  It features billabongs (waterways) with abundant wildlife, including both freshwater and saltwater crocodiles, waterfalls, spectacular scenery, and lots of Aboriginal rock art.  I took a 3 day/2 night camping trip to the park with Adventure Tours from Darwin.

Beware of the crocodiles, which inhabit the billabongs of Kakadu.  We sighted a few from the comfort of our boat. Kakadu is on fire!  Actually, this is a controlled burn to clear away dead brush and prevent a major fire.

Aboriginal rock art at Ubirr.  These paintings span a period from 20,000 years ago to the 20th century. They depict animals, people (including the arrival of the white man!), and the development of Aboriginal law.  Many Aboriginal people believe that the older paintings were painted by spirits.  It is not uncommon to see older drawings overlaid by new ones.
