Martin and I on the train from Hualien to Taitung with our new Taiwanese friends Abel and his lovely wife. At the beach (complete with concrete slabs) in Taitung.  Off in the distance is Green Island. Matsu Temple, a Taoist temple in the central Taitung. A fruit stand in Taitung's night market.

An interesting looking beach hut lit up at night. The bustling market by day. Furnaces for burning "ghost money," like this one on the beach in Taitung, are all over Taiwan. My "home" in Taitung, the Hsin Hsin Hotel.

The Dragon Phoenix Temple, on the slopes of Carp Hill overlooking Taitung. The spectacular view of Taitung from the top of Carp Hill. The pagoda on Carp Hill.

The old abandoned Taitung Railway Station.
Something that struck me as bizarre is the Taitung railway station in the center of town, which is now completely abandoned.  In its place is a new station, but it is 5km away and requires a bus ride to get downtown.  Why would they abandon this more convenient station in favor of one way out of town?  This perplexing mystery to me was somewhat resolved after I found this website.
